Na Nin x Lasso La Lune

Lasso La Lune is a love letter to Appalachia, a project by Haylee Childress focused on creating items that are soft + nostalgic. She earned her BFA in Craft + Material Studies with a concentration in Textiles from VCUarts in 2019.

We're so excited for our collaboration with Lasso la Lune on a limited edition of naturally dyed Na Nin sweat sets. Created using only natural and preloved fibers, each piece is made and dyed by hand in small batches in her Richmond studio.

Can you tell us more about the origin story and inspiration behind Lasso La Lune, including the name?

Lasso was born out of a love of textiles and experimenting with natural dyes, making items and clothing for myself. I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember. My Meemaw taught me how to use the sewing machine her mother gifted her, then passed it on to me. It’s the only machine I’ve used to this day… old faithful.

Lasso La Lune was my personal instagram handle for some time.  At the time it came from a mix of taking french classes, and a favorite quote from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life: “What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.” It was truly a coincidence that it stuck, but I like the silly alliteration, and it feels very hopeful and romantic.

Lasso La Lune offers a range of thoughtfully made pieces, from apparel to accessories. What attracts you to working specifically with natural fibers like silk and cotton as well as botanical materials to create your pieces?

Nature has so much to offer. I think a lot of my ideas and inspirations lend themselves nicely to natural materials. Natural dyes are most successful on natural fibers, they’re perfect for each other. There’s definitely a sustainability aspect to my process, however, it's not perfect.

There are several special motifs that feel very characteristic to Lasso La Lune, such as bows and ribbons, organic patterns, and elements of nature. Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?

A love letter to Appalachia is sort of a blanket term I keep coming back to because I’m inspired by so much that’s connected to that place. Mostly girlhood memories - moments, people and places I love, objects, and a nostalgic feeling. A bow on a family heirloom, pretending to be fairies by the creek, the county fair, my grandmother’s true love being the beach despite living in the mountains. Many people don’t know, but I’m a retired equestrian. My love of horses and that lifestyle influences me heavily as well. I take all the bits and pieces and romanticize them into something I can translate into cloth.

We love your beautifully soft, hand-dyed take on the “realtree” inspired pattern featured in our collaborative pieces. What was the process behind designing this pattern and choosing the natural materials that contributed to the finished product?

When I initially started experimenting with botanical prints on fabric, it reminded me of realtree camo that I love so much. It took many samples using different dyes and leaves to get it just right. The leaves I use for this process have a small window of time to be gathered, freshly fallen autumn leaves that are still soft, not crunchy yet. The base dye comes from trees too - walnuts.

Are there any future projects, ideas, or dreams that you’re excited about for Lasso?

Working with Na Nin was a dream collaboration. I’m so glad y’all love realtree as much as I do. There’s so many talented people locally that I admire. I’m looking forward to doing more collaborations in the near future, creating things that are really somethin’ special. I plan to keep making things that bring me joy and a sense of nostalgia. Yearning for the next fall season because I will definitely be making more naturally dyed realtree pieces. On a personal note - I hope to get back in the saddle (literally) very soon.
