The Dressing Room Series: Jane Eddy

Welcome back to the latest edition of our Dressing Room Series – a rotating feature where we invite a friend from the community to join us in the dressing room at our second location in Bon Air. Get a behind the-scenes look at our friends' style, their favorite pieces, and share what they’re loving right now.

Jane, you mentioned in your Dressing Room Series that you used to make your own clothes - where did you take inspiration from at that time?

I have always been a “clotheshorse” as we were called back in the day. My friend recently called us fashionistas. This was before the days of influencers on the internet. We combed through pages of Seventeen magazine and the 70’s produced its own style! I made wide leg pants and denim skirts - all the styles that seem to be coming back.

As someone who has seen previous decades of fashion, culture, and trends come and go, how would you describe your own personal style today?

My style has been through many changes over the years. When I was working you were supposed to wear suits to be professional. I suppose that is still true in many professions but I think people are more willing to be casual. I don’t really wear “typical” clothing for women of my age. I take lots of inspiration from young people. They are willing to break the rules and not try to look like everyone else. Comfort in what I am wearing makes me more relaxed. My style has evolved to be simple shapes with great accessories. If your clothes are not screaming “notice me” you can wear timeless jewelry, scarves, and shoes that bring notice to your whole look.

Why do you think it’s important to invest in quality when it comes to apparel?

Personally I think that if I am going to spend money on clothing, I want it to last.  I care for my clothing so that it will last through time - another reason that my style is a simple classic look. Some clothing companies expect that the style will only last for one or two seasons and then it will be thrown away. I strongly object to this because it only adds to waste on our planet. Buy good fabrics, take care of them, and wear them for years!

We’ve had such a long and cold winter! Spring will *hopefully* be around the corner - what are some things you’re looking forward to for the warmer weather?

Richmond humidity can be brutal. I am looking forward to wearing my Robyn tops with loose pants. I have a great cotton gauze crop top and wide leg pants from Na Nin that are screaming to get out of the closet and travel! A classic linen shift dress. All the natural fibers in loose styles that allow my skin to breathe. With the right clothes I look forward to outdoor dining, some plein air painting, walking along the James!
