The Dressing Room Series: David
How would you describe your personal style? When shopping with Na Nin, what kind of vintage pieces are you most drawn to?
I do my best to buy fewer, better things, especially anything made in America. I love that Na Nin only sells well made vintage items that will last. Na Nin vintage is my go-to for classic things that can be layered and be dressed up or down like light jackets, oxfords, and polos. I also love that you never know what each week could bring. Na Nin’s new drop emails are the one message I will open 100% of the time, but you have to be quick for the hottest items! I recently missed out on an early Thom Browne crewneck sweatshirt at an amazing price. I’ll be sure not to sleep on the next one.
Although Na Nin is primarily a women’s brand, we source a lot of menswear and menswear-inspired looks. What’s been one of your favorite pieces so far?
My favorite thing I have found at Na Nin is a black Givenchy polo from an activewear line they must have made around 1999/2000. The fabric is perfect and I’ve never been able to find another one like it. I wear it at least once a week when the weather is warm. I was thrilled to be watching season 3 of The Sopranos and saw one of the characters wearing a tracksuit from the same line. Tony’s guys have great taste!
How was your shopping experience at our new Bon Air location?
It still amazes me how Bon Air has changed. I grew up in the neighborhood skating all over the curbs at the Buford Road Shopping Center back when the most exciting thing we had was a Pizza Hut. I moved back to Virginia in 2015 and saw the area start to change, but Na Nin’s arrival has made it official: Bon Air is now a cool place to live. I love that the store has vintage items to try on in person in addition to the rest of your in-house brands and things like Aesop, which you can’t get anywhere else in Virginia that I know of.
A glimpse of little David skating around the neighborhood, circa 2000.
If you could embody any of our Na Nin personal fragrances, which one would it be - and why?
I have to go with the Lavender and Virginia Pine because I like to think of myself as pleasant, non-toxic, and locally made.
Here at Na Nin, we truly value our community and friends, and we know you’re deeply involved in the cycling community! What does that community mean to you, and how do you think it’s shaped who you are today?
I like to say that at the end of the day, though we may compete with one another, cycling is all about the Three F’s: Friends, Fun, and Fitness. At its best, the Richmond cycling community is active, diverse, and welcoming to new people who are getting into the sport. I would never be racing road or cyclocross bikes today if it wasn’t for the weekly events, like the Bryan Park Training Series, that run from Spring to Fall. But you don’t have to race to get engaged. There are multiple group rides literally every day of the week in Richmond that people are welcome to join.
Also… I just enjoy spending time with other people who love to drink large amounts of coffee.
