The Dressing Room Series: Avery Adrien
Avery, your Instagram bio reads “dopamine fits” - what does that look like to you, and how does Na Nin play into that style?
Dopamine 'fits are just my take on dressing in what feels good and feels exactly like me. I use my clothing as communication, to both myself and to the world. For the most part, I've curated my wardrobe to articulate my point of view without even having to open my mouth. Then I can go in and dress in pieces that make me feel "like myself," while still taking care of myself. those amazing sweats I bought when I was in the shop for example? They have a shape, they have perspective, they feel rich. They demonstrate my taste level and how I fit into my surroundings. But when I reach for them? I reach for them when I want to be held and nurtured. When I want to be wrapped in "cozy" to help regulate my day.
What are your important values/motivations when shopping with a small business such as Na Nin?
It's important to me that what I buy goes toward providing for real people and real families. For my neighbors. When I moved my family down here from the busy Northern VA area nearly 2 years ago, the word that kept coming to mind when I thought about why we did it was "community." Richmond is community. It's such a sweet, small place where neighborhood businesses are the city's heartbeat.
It’s so sweet to see you post content about you and your two little ones! If you had to pick two Na Nin scents that best represent each of the girls (purely based off of *vibes*), which would they be?
Haha I love this. My Prudence is Jolene. Spicy with a mischievous glint. She knows exactly how to get what she wants. And my oldest, Primrose -- she's Earth. Grounded and firm in her beliefs. My stoic tree.
We are so thrilled that warm weather is finally here! What is Avery’s wardrobe consisting of lately?
Same! I spend most summers in anything in one or two pieces. I'm not big on any extra accessories (belts, etc.) Give me a crisp cotton dress most days. Lately, I've also been loving matching sets, like a cotton button down and shorts. I rotate between broken-in leather and woven sandals.
With Mother’s Day around the corner, share some of your self-care that keeps you feeling grounded?
I solo parent the girls a lot of the weekends, and my most cherished time is our quiet time. It used to be "naptime," but Primrose is firmly against that title now that she's 4 ("and a half, Mom!") So after our morning outings and lunch, Prudence goes down for 2.5 hours while Prim sits in her room to color and listen to her Toniebox. And that's my time to enjoy all by myself in my clean room on freshly washed sheets. I got this expensive, "luxury" detergent I'm crazy about that leaves the most lovely floral scent on my bedspread. With the overhead fan going, a Na Nin candle lit, I snuggle in with Real Housewives of New York reruns until everyone's back up for part 2 of the day!
